Some books you just have to read in order to fully understand how talented an author is at her craft. Lori Armstrong's Blood Ties is an incredible story of suspense, intrigue, and relationships that had me on the edge of my seat until the last page. Julie Collins has a heart-wrenching past that colors how she views others and relationships, but also leaves her uniquely qualified to solve cases as a private investigator.This book has all the elements I find critical in a novel: strong relationships between characters, strong character development, and a wide range of emotions that kept me flipping pages and then re- reading the book to make sure I got it all. This is an absolute must read, and you won't be disappointed. Fortunately, there are more books in the series and you will devour each and every one of them over and over again.

Lots of characters for the reader to keep track of in this tale.
Lots of rather odd expressions and references to ponder.
Lots of 'red herrings' to confuse and keep the reader reading.
Lots of pontificating and what (pretty much) is just filler!
STILL - kept me reading until the end ..... even if I'd forgotten who the who-done-it actually was!
It was a pleasure to read a "real" novel where the characters and plot are well-developed, believable, and entertaining. The author noted the book was originally released in 2005 and has been updated, though not in all respects references to vintage pop culture remained. And that made the book more interesting and realistic!
Julie Collins, our hero, is driven by the unsolved death of her half-brother, angst, self-doubt, and a warm heart. Like a mama bear, she takes care of others before herself. She dates men who live on the edge while the romantic tension with her partner and best friend Kevin is strong.
Julie describes herself as foul-mouthed and foul-mooded. If you are offended by the F-bomb, this is not your book, though its use is as practical as possible, not thrown about unnecessarily. There are no pages-long sex scenes, if that's your thing.
I found the book inviting, fresh, and entertaining. I believe you will also. Good read!
This is the first book I read by Lori Armstrong, but I have read most of her Rough Riders series. I was not disappointed in the quality of writing as Lori Armstrong. The character of Julie Collins is flawed which most people are and Kevin is a likeable like a puppy. I enjoyed the banter of the characters and meeting all the gang. I can't wait to read the others of this series.
This book had me guessing who did what and I was completely fooled. I enjoyed the who done it aspect and as I said was very well written and I couldn't wait to finish it.
It is well worth the read and if you ever get the chance to meet Lori Armstrong, she is as sweet as can be, and loves to chat with her readers.
This mystery novel had it all...wonderful characters who are bigger than life yet so realistic also, enough intrigue and action to keep you deeply rooted in the book foregoing laundry, supper and even that end-of-the-day glass of wine just so you don't have to stop reading for a moment, and human emotion that runs the gamut from tears to laughter with a little sexual frustration and emotional complexity thrown in for good measure. You will LOVE Julie Collins and her ragtag group of friends and enemies!!!
Blood Ties is book 1 of the Julie Collins Mystery series. Julie is a secretary in a sheriff's office and also a part time PI working with a friend. Sorry I didn't connect with the characters, especially Julie's life style. The book was set in South Dakota and Julie had a half brother who was part American Indian. He had been killed and found floating in a river. When a girl was also found in that same river, Julie became interested in the case. There was no real closure in these cases so I am assuming that the story continues in subsequent books. I don't plan on reading them.
If any of you haven't read the story og Julie Collins yet, please do yourself a favor and do so.
I found Lori Armstrong, searching for Lorelei James books, and was not disapointed. When I met Julie and Kevin, I had only read the Rough Riders series (by Lorelei James), but part of what I love about Lorelei/Lori's writing is the fluidity in conversations and flawless story-telling, and these series has both.
Blood ties is the first of four books in the series, that only get better as you go!
Later on in the series, the "Blondie/Martinez" relationship had me laughing out loud at times. These two (along with Kevin, Jimmer, Big Mike, the "Julie Collins Fan Club" and the rest of the reacurring characters) make me wish there were more books in this series.

Mysteries usually aren't my thing but I'm so glad I gave this book a shot. Julie Collins is the type of no nonsense character you can really relate to. She drinks, she swears, she got grit and determination which makes her absolutely fantastic as far as I'm concerned. And the who done it aspect kept me guessing right to the end. This book is a very good read and I'm really looking forward to the next one.
